SEO vs AI Search — what MENA businesses must do now

By Mohammad Aref Khalil · July 2026

SEO and AI search are not rivals — they are two layers of the same visibility system. SEO earns you rankings in classic results; AI search visibility (AEO) earns you presence inside generated answers. MENA businesses need both, and the regional gap in Arabic AI content makes acting now unusually rewarding.

Is SEO dead?

No — and anyone selling you that is selling panic. Google still processes billions of searches daily, and AI systems themselves lean on well-optimized pages as their source material. Strong SEO is literally the raw material of AI answers. What's dead is SEO as a complete strategy.

What's actually changing for MENA?

Three shifts: (1) Arabic-speaking users are adopting AI assistants fast, often skipping classic search for research questions. (2) Arabic content is underrepresented in AI training and retrieval — meaning thin competition for brands that publish well-structured Arabic content. (3) Regional buying questions ("best X in Palestine/Jordan/Gulf") often return sparse AI answers today — seats that are still empty.

What should you do this quarter?

  • Keep your SEO foundation — technical health, intent-matched content, authority. It feeds both layers.
  • Add the AEO layer — direct-answer formatting, FAQ schema, entity consistency, AI crawlers allowed.
  • Publish in Arabic seriously — native-quality, question-driven content in your customers' actual dialect of search.
  • Baseline and track — record what AI says about you today; re-check monthly.

The regional brands that treat AI search as a channel — not a curiosity — will own their categories' answers before competitors realize the game changed.
