How AI assistants choose which brands to recommend

By Mohammad Aref Khalil · July 2026

AI assistants recommend brands based on a blend of training data, live web retrieval, and authority signals: how consistently a brand is described across the web, how directly its content answers relevant questions, whether trusted third parties mention it, and whether AI crawlers can read it at all. Understanding this blend is the difference between being recommended and being invisible.

Where do AI answers actually come from?

Two layers. First, the model's training: what it absorbed about your industry and its players. Second — increasingly dominant — live retrieval: the assistant searches the web in real time and synthesizes an answer from pages it can access and parse. Your job is to win both layers.

What signals make a brand "recommendable"?

  • Consistency: the same name, offering, and location everywhere — your site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, directories. Inconsistency reads as uncertainty, and AI doesn't recommend what it's uncertain about.
  • Direct answers: pages that state clearly what you do, for whom, where, and at what level of expertise — in the first lines, in plain language.
  • Third-party validation: reviews, press mentions, guest articles, industry listings. AI weighs what others say about you more than what you say about yourself.
  • Structured data: schema markup (Person, Service, FAQ, Organization) that turns your pages into machine-readable facts.
  • Accessibility: AI crawlers explicitly allowed in robots.txt, fast pages, clean HTML.

Can you test this for your own brand?

Yes, in ten minutes: ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity — "best [your category] in [your market]" and "what do you know about [your brand]?" The answers are your baseline. If you're absent or wrong, that's the gap AEO closes — methodically, signal by signal.
